33 Apocalypse Avenue, Thursday Evening

Jack wasn't ready to say goodbye to Kaidan. He remained quite firmly opposed to this general trend of people leaving.

But if Kaidan was going to go fight purple blobby land jellyfish --or whatever he was up to -- he deserved a decent send-off. Which was why Jack had ordered several pizzas, laid in a few kegs of Canadian lager, and sent an email to everyone he could think of who might want one more chance to hang out with Kaidan.

A bad action movie played on the TV, though the sound was quite soft, and everything was ready for a low-key party.

As much as he disliked the reason for this one, there was some part of Jack that always loved a party. He buzzed about straightening this and fussing over that, and seemed happy enough to be playing the host.

Emma had totally called in sick to class and work for this. Why wouldn't she? Plus? She'd brought actual New York Deep Dish. Lots of it. Ten pizzas, actually.

She knew how much a biotic, a werewolf, a growing mutant, and the other disreputable denizens of their building (and assorted groupies) could eat. Emma wasn't going to let Kaidan leave hungry.

"Hullo, darlings, I'm home!" she yelled, kicking at the door with her foot to be let in. Sure, she still had her keys, but her arms were full. "And Auntie Emma brought more food!"

"I'd tell you you were my favorite auntie if that wasn't creepy," Jack said cheerfully. He kissed Emma's cheek and carried the extra pizzas over to the table. "Hello there. Hope the lampreys weren't too much trouble."

"Is that what those are? They're disgustingly creepy," Emma replied cheerfully as she handed over the pizzas. "Hope I brought enough, but I had to discard one or two due to lamprey."

So, so gross.

"More than enough," Jack promised. "Kaidan didn't want anything too big. And I think we can only eat two pizzas each or so."

He made a face at the pies. "And now I'm thinking about lamprey pizza."

"I'd be a bit like a sushi pizza, wouldn't it?" Emma speculated. "But still wriggly."

She tossed her purse by the door as she kicked off her heels before padding over to return Jack's kiss on the cheek. "Kiss kiss, darling. Miss me?"

"Always," Jack told her, putting his hands on her waist to draw her into a closer embrace. "Even got a tattoo for you."

It wasn't the most elegant segue ever, but he couldn't wait another second to tell her.

True, Éponine didn't know Kaidan especially well, but he had been nice to her in the few encounters they'd had, and as a general rule she remembered people who had been nice to her. Even if that involved a bit more remembering now than it used to.

Also, food, and an opportunity to avoid thinking about that whole carnival business; good enough reasons to deal with the silly-looking fish falling from the sky. So she was here, relatively lamprey-free thanks to an umbrella she'd appropriated from the employee break room at the post office, and carefully brushing bits of cat hair off her skirt.

"Thanks for coming," Jack said as he wandered over. "The rain isn't too bad right now, is it?"

"More likely to bite than usual, but at least it isn't cold," Éponine said brightly. "And they aren't coming down too thick at the moment. Still, you've got to be careful not to let them land on your head, so it's just as well they're bigger than the little fish from yesterday."

Her cat would probably disagree, but that was why Alouette was indoors with all the windows shut, thank you.

"It's nice of you to do this," she added.

Jack shrugged. "I had to celebrate having the house more to myself, didn't I?" he said, in a way that suggested exactly how much he didn't mean it. "Besides, it's always nice to get together."

And the slightly twisted, only halfway mirthful smile Éponine gave him in response said that she had a pretty good idea how much he didn't mean it.

"Yes, it's been a bit since I've stopped in to see you, hasn't it? That's a shame." She'd kept the light, almost breezy tone up, but dropped it now for a gentler one. "Well, in any case I'm glad you invited everyone."

"And I haven't made it by the post office lately," Jack said apologetically. "We need to fix that, don't we? I keep getting caught up in silliness. It's good to have tonight, at least."

"Even if the reason leaves a bit to be desired, hmm?" Éponine was trying to sound understanding, but it was entirely possible that some of the nuance of that was lost in her gin-roughened voice. "It's just as well, no doubt you've been as busy as I have."

"I wish I had more exciting news to report on that front," Jack admitted. "Mostly it's just been classes and work. I didn't even get sucked into that carnival last week."

Because he'd been on TV Tropes.

Allie was glad Fandom's latest bit of whimsy had worn off in time for the party. But she still wasn't happy about the reason for it, even if she tried to put a happy face on.

"Exactly," she nodded. "And it's not like I have so many friends that I'm not going to notice when one isn't around. Which, yes, I know, selfish of me but there was a reason I never was willing to let people in before I came here."

"There are a lot more people worth letting in here," Jack said briefly, and glanced over to Kaidan. "It's not goodbye forever. It can't be."

"Not if we have anything to say about it. Portalocity on the other hand...." It was easier to blame Portalocity then think about the fact that Kaidan could potentially be heading into danger.
