Even though they’d left London via portal early that morning, it was long after sunset Saturday before Jack and Sebastien were settled in 1901 Baltimore. Jack had forgotten how confoundedly long travel in this time took.

He supposed he had forgotten other things, as well. It was no matter. He was fresh from a meeting with a revolutionary leader he'd known while he was in school, and his head was full of ideas.

There were three others arranged around the hotel room they'd taken refuge in: the sorceress Lady Abigail Irene Garrett with her small dog on her knee; Mrs. Phoebe Smith, the noted novelist; and Doctor Garrett's servant Mary, whom Abby Irene had insisted be included in their councils.

In which we meet our cast of characters, and make travel plans. )

[OOC: Taken and lightly edited from New Amsterdam, by Elizabeth Bear. NFI, NFB, and I apologize in advance for the many days of spam ahead.]

It was a rather dreadful day. A gray mist fell from the sky as the last remnants of overnight rain, and a chill wind whipped through the air.

As these were the only circumstances under which Sebastien de Ulloa saw daylight, he was determined to be grateful for it. The unhappy work that brought him and his temporary companion out would not wait for the sun to set.

He stood back for a moment, assessing the scene. The badly abused corpse of a young man laid just outside the door, and blood and a thick white substance both spattered the marble stairs. A city patrolman still paced about self-importantly. If Sebastien's sense of the case was correct, he was waiting for some superior.

Tony spotted the body and instinctively averted his eyes. 'It's not a real vacation if you don't see the local corpses,' he muttered. )

[OOC: Continues from here. Threeway-preplay tango directed by [livejournal.com profile] bitten_notshy, [livejournal.com profile] brandyforapples, and [livejournal.com profile] wantstodirect. Basic situation and some dialogue stolen from "Wax" by Elizabeth Bear. Sixth verse, same as the first, but a whole lot louder and a whole lot worse. NFI, NFB. OOC = AOK. And you people should not let Ahdari code unsupervised.]

For being a hundred and ten years in the future in a world with a completely different history, Jack didn't think he was doing too badly as he settled into his alcove with a book of American history at hand. He'd met interesting people while waiting for the "shuttle" and at the picnic (and while his roommate was difficult, that might be largely a matter of staying out of the conjurer's way), and he enjoyed both of his classes so far. And he still had two more, one with DCI Garrett -- no, Professor Garrett, here -- to look forward to.

He'd already written one letter to Sebastien -- an I got here in one piece but you should fire that coachman sort of note -- but it was time for a longer one; it wouldn't do to let the vampire think himself forgotten, even if Jack would be home for a weekend soon enough. He scratched his pen quickly across the paper, detailing his days in his neat handwriting and lingering just a bit over the short but suggestive passage about Ronan.

He was sure Sebastien would be delighted to hear he was making new friends.

[OOC: Totally open to cabinmates.]
