Kitchen, 33 Apocalypse Ave., Saturday Morning

There were certain advantages to having been on the island for most of three years.

For example, when one woke up and saw a woman looking back from the mirror over one's dresser, the experienced male Fandomite who'd been through this twice before did not shriek -- or at least, he didn't if he was Jack.

Instead, Jack permitted himself one streak of swearing, then took a picture of his new ... assets to send to Emma to tease her. Then he pulled on a t-shirt and yoga pants Emma had forgotten when she moved back to school, twisted his hair into a knot, and padded into a kitchen to start the pot of coffee.

He wondered if he ought to wake Kaidan and Ronan to warn them, but decided against it. A sudden switch in genders was really the sort of thing you had to discover on your own.

"Isn't it just?" Jack sighed. "It happened back in January, too. Usually the island doesn't do it more than once in a year."

Derek's arms were crossed over his chest. At least he didn't have too much in the way there. But his shoulders were noticeably smaller. So that shirt just hung on him.

Ugh.

"But it goes away?"

"Thankfully," Jack said. He was slight as a man, even slighter as a woman; even Emma's clothes were a size or two too large. "This is my third time through it."

Derek was just going to glower in the general direction of his new found ladyparts. Glower them into submission.

"Are you actually glaring at your breasts?" Jack asked, managing not to sound like he was about to laugh. "Don't. What have they done to you?"

"No." He totally was. "I woke up to a call from my sister. She's going to have questions."

And they were of a personal variety, Jack! Personal!

"Ah," Jack said, wincing. "Could you tell her you had a girlfriend?"

Women were drawn to nice abs and brooding, right?

Stop making Derek want to kill things, Jaaaaaack.

"No. She'll ask questions." Because, while they might be werewolves, they were still siblings first.

"Tell her it was a bad date and you don't want to talk about it?" Jack suggested. "Or just tell her the truth."

Because that would make things better.

If he could make you explain it to her, he would.

Derek made a noise that might have been in understanding. Or just another grumpy noise in the direction of his lovely, lady lumps.

Given the chance, Jack would explain it in great detail. The problem was he'd probably enjoy talking to Laura a little too much.

"Right," Jack said, after a pause. "Do you want coffee, or is that another thing that doesn't work on you?"

"I like the taste." That counted.

It did. Jack poured a second mug and handed it to Derek before taking his own to the table.

He tried to come up with something to say, failed, and shrugged in a way he hoped suggested things would be all right, or at least that they'd end.

Derek shrugged right on back, taking a sip of his coffee. It helped take the focus on his strange new scents.

"At least it's not the full moon."

Jack shuddered at that. "Don't say that," he said. "It gives me horrible thoughts about being a female wolf."

Rutting, mostly. And, worse, pregnancy with a wolf baby. Jack's imagination had a way of going for the worst.

"It would be harder to keep you contained," Derek said matter'o'factly. "You would be able to handle a higher level of pain to escape."

And there went a whole new level of horrors to consider.

"Sedate me?" Jack suggested. "Or let me in the woods and have Ronan put up a barrier."

"It'll be something to keep in mind." Derek was so, so cheerful.

"And something to hope we don't have to deal with," Jack said, and looked across the table at Derek. "So do you think you could call before you come over, or should I give you a key and let my housemates know you might turn up?"

He didn't honestly mind Derek turning up unannounced; it seemed a perfectly Derek course of action. But at the same time, he didn't want to encourage him to ruin the locks.

"A key?" Whoa whoa. Jack, you hadn't even bought him dinner yet!

[bitten_notshy]

Jack shrugged, acknowledging he was getting ahead of himself. "You let yourself in anyhow," he pointed out. "And I doubt telling you not to would do much good. At least if you had a key you wouldn't break a door doing it."

He hoped not, anyhow.

"I could use the window." Was he joking? It was just so hard to tell.

"I'm so tempted to make a 'raised by wolves' joke here."

Oh, c'mon! Try a new one!

Derek rolled his eyes. "A key works."

"I'll bring one by the bar Wednesday," Jack said, satisfied with the compromise.

And not at all ashamed to have caused an eyeroll.
