Jack wasn't ready to say goodbye to Kaidan. He remained quite firmly opposed to this general trend of people leaving.

But if Kaidan was going to go fight purple blobby land jellyfish --or whatever he was up to -- he deserved a decent send-off. Which was why Jack had ordered several pizzas, laid in a few kegs of Canadian lager, and sent an email to everyone he could think of who might want one more chance to hang out with Kaidan.

A bad action movie played on the TV, though the sound was quite soft, and everything was ready for a low-key party.

"It's classified," Kaidan said, "and please don't dig around for it." He let out a sigh. "They made me an offer, actually. I just finally decided to take it."

"I won't dig," she promised mildly, giving him a crooked grin. "I'll even do my best to block you out in case you get maudlin and start ruminating on it."

"How long have you been sitting on this offer?"

"Since the start of the summer," Kaidan said. "Since we found out about Shepard."

Yeah. That'd been the start of a lot of things.

"Ah." Yes, that about summed it up. And it meant that Emma didn't have to be a telepath to have a few good guesses as to why Kaidan was leaving.

Emma took another sip of her soda, then; "You're a good person, and I'm not just saying that because you tolerate me when most people don't even bother trying. I don't want to see this swallow you up whole." 'This' could be the Alliance, or Shepard, or both. Emma wasn't picky.

"Be careful, Kaidan."

"I'll be as careful as I can be," Kaidan said. Practical, yeah, but also slightly awed by the fact he'd get that kind of reaction from Emma.

Shhh. Don't lord it over him.

"But I'm still a marine. Running into danger is my job, more or less."

"Running into danger is totally your job, and part of your adorable boy-scout charm, but I've seen what duty can do to people," Emma teased, batting her lashes at him. "Just consider listening if the common sense fairy starts screaming 'This is a TERRIBLE IDEA, Alenko!' at you. If you start hearing it in my voice, then either get a sanity or morality check, or text me to make sure I'm not snooping in your boss's heads for funsies."

Beat.

"That last part was a joke. I can't actually do multidimensional intergalactic mind-reading, for the record." Yet. She was working on it.

Kaidan let out a little snort. "I'll keep it in mind," he said. His mouth tugged a little, up into something of a small smile. "Uh, thanks," he added.
