Room 308, Friday Morning

Jack hadn't really slept after getting back from his date with Emma. He'd taken a token nap, but in the end the excitement got to him. By seven, he was dressed and his possessions had been boxed neatly. (He had no idea how he'd acquired so many things in just over a year, but he had.)

He had a few hours before his portal left, so he rested on his bare mattress, reading the book Ms. Cabot had given him as a way of focusing his mind away from his nerves. He'd have Sebastien in his new world; nothing could go too far wrong.

The door to the room was open.

"Seriously, you're leaving to like go to summer school or something, aren't you, you geek," Rose said, frowning as she appeared in his doorway.

"You caught me," Jack said dryly. "I'm going to spend the next two months doing algebra and taking standardized tests."

The dryness didn't last long, though, as he grinned at her. "It's been an age. I'm glad I caught you in between training adventures."

"Ew," Rose's face showed exactly what she thought about that plan. "I don't think you're saveable with your going to college and shit." She shrugged even as she grinned back. "I don't know if they're really adventures. Just boring stuff."

"What kind of boring stuff?" Jack asked, rolling his eyes a bit to show what he thought of the face she was making. "And you're right. I'm unrepentant about college. Law school, even. I have the chance -- I should take it."

"God, law school? I don't even wanna imagine dealing with college for the next four years," Rose said. "But - you know, it's good for you. How's that England thing going."

"It should be all right," Jack said. "I talked Sebastien into coming with me, and we'll have a few months to get settled in before my classes start. I'm more worried for him than for me -- I've had a year to get used to this time, and he hasn't."

"Hasn't he been alive for like forever?" she asked. "Am I right on that? He'll be fine."

Not that she was going to judge about worrying about a vampire, shh.

"He's eleven hundred," Jack admitted. "As he keeps reminding me. But you should see him try to use my phone. He thinks it's" -- he fumbled for the word -- "whimsical."

"Well...at least he doesn't think it's evil and crazy?" Rose tried. "It'll be interesting at least?"

"And it's better than going back to 1900 and trying to fit in there," Jack conceded. "I'm not complaining."

She nodded, twisting her lips a little as she came in finally to find a seat. "I'm glad you're not heading back to the olden times," she said finally. "Cause I don't wanna wear a skirt when I come to visit."

"And you had better come visit," Jack said instantly. "And we'll have homecoming, and ... it seems like the alumni find plenty of reasons to make it back here. Any idea where you're headed to at the end of summer yet?"

"Hey, England? I can probably get Lissa to," Rose agreed, smiling. "1900? Not so much. But if Lissa's agreement with the Queen holds up, we're going to live at Court and she can go to Lehigh. It's in Pennsylvania."

"I think I know where that is," Jack said (meaning Pennsylvania, not Lehigh). "That's fabulous, though. You'll be at the center of everything, won't you?"

She shrugged a little. "Yeah, I guess. It'll be good for Lissa, but I was kinda looking forward to us being on our own somewhere before all the politics started. Not that it matters, but you know."

"Did they ask her?" Jack asked. (He loved politics, but he figured Rose knew the situation better than he did.) "Or is that not how it works?"

Rose grinned. "Yeah, she got to totally own the queen and bargain up for it," she said proudly. "It was amazing. She got the queen to agree to let her go to University of Pennsylvania in a few years if she lived at Court. Moroi never go to big schools like that. It was awesome." For Lissa. Rose was - not entirely thrilled, but she was well aware that didn't matter at all.

"I liked Lissa," Jack mused. "She's so ladylike, but it seems like she gets her own way when it comes down to it. I'm glad she'll get to explore -- even if it isn't your first choice."

"That's about right," Rose agreed, unable not to smile at another person appreciating her friend. "She's gonna change things. Living at Court's the right spot for her. It'll just be different."

"Different's not so bad," Jack mused. "Will Dimitri and Adrian move back with you, or are they staying here?"

"Dimitri will go back," she said. It was amazing how quickly the end of summer and all that contained was coming up. "Adrian - he's like two years behind us so he can do whatever the hell he wants, I suppose."

"I don't know if I knew that," Jack said, referring to the timelines. "You sound about ready to move on past him."

She shrugged a little. "He's at St Vlad's too. It just makes some stuff more difficult with him here. I guess he's an okay guy though."

"I don't know him enough to say," Jack answered, shrugging a bit and changing the subject.

"Do you have plans to terrorize the new blood after I go? It is your last chance."

Not expecting Jack to understand the cultural details inherent in her comment, Rose grinned at him. "Hell yes. And i there's no one to get their shirt off, I'll just enjoy the faces of all of them. You should pretend to be a new kid and come back. Just for the picnic.
