Mitchell

After speaking to Carl out on the street, there was only one thing left for Mitchell to do.

It was also likely to be the hardest part.

He needed to talk to Jack and Sebastien about taking him in. He sighed, leaning against the wall, and waited.

Sebastien & Jack

They appeared in tandem a few moments later, both a bit pale. Clearly, they'd been talking the whole case through.

"How is he?" Sebastien asked, since Jack didn't seem inclined to break the silence.

Mitchell

"He's... all right, considering," Mitchell said, rubbing at the side of his nose. "Look, I need to talk to you about something."

His tone said that they weren't going to like it.

Sebastien & Jack

There was always that considering, wasn't there?

Jack and Sebastien exchanged a wary glance. "Then talk," Sebastien suggested, with the niggling feeling he was about to be asked for a favor.

Mitchell

"Carl can't stay here," Mitchell started. The amount of nervous gestures he was employing - running his hand through his hair right now, for instance - would lend credence to Sebastien's theory. "I could ask Ivan to get him down to Brazil, but it's... Ivan. He's not exactly the most trustworthy vampire in the world."

Sebastien

"And Brazil's a long way." Though it was no doubt an easier trip if you portaled, or didn't burn to death in the sun, but Sebastien wasn't thinking about either factor at the moment. The nervous display was quite distracting. "There is your island, if he wanted."

Mitchell

"I can't send him to Fandom," Mitchell said, with a quick jerk of his head. "Not after all of this. He needs time. Stability."

He set his jaw.

"I know... this is a lot to ask," he started, cautiously. "But you've... got things under control, and..."

Jack

"We aren't running a halfway house." Jack's indignation got the better part of him. "He'd need help settling in, finding courtesans if that would even work, all of that."

Besides, he didn't like the idea of Sebastien picking up stray vampires. Stray humans not named Jack were bad enough.

Sebastien

"Fortunately," Sebastien said, in a sharper tone than he normally used with Jack, "it is not entirely up to the young man. I assume you want him to go sooner rather than later. What does he have to say about it?"

Mitchell

Mitchell kept his attention on Sebastien, this time. It was him he was imploring for this favour, and he knew it. He nodded vaguely as he answered, "He thinks it's better than the alternative."

(In Mitchell's estimation, five minutes with Ivan would show them that it really, really was, but he wasn't going to call in the vampire just to make that point.)

Sebastien

Sebastien, for his part, was going to ignore Jack's impressive, if silent, ongoing display of adolescent petulance. Later, he supposed vaguely, they might need to discuss manners.

Not that those discussions had been sticking so well of late, but that was yet another problem.

Mitchell's proposal required some consideration, but not too much. The task was simple enough, and he suspected Carl would be too grateful to cause trouble.

"We can take him home and put him up until his feet are on the ground," he said graciously. "I wouldn't be here if I hadn't gotten much the same a few times."

Which was a reminder to Jack as well.

Mitchell

Another nod. A slow one, this time.

"Thank you," Mitchell said, sincerely. He'd crossed his arms as he leaned against the sill, knees crooked. "I owe you an enormous favour." A wry smile. "Even as I'm repaying one to him, I suppose."

Sebastien

"It will come back to us someday," Sebastien said philosophically, truly believing that. His own posture relaxed. "Give Jack an hour or so to fill him in on the differences between worlds, and we can move him out tonight."

The order in his voice on that second sentence? That would keep Jack from bolting for the pub, or to complain about how awful vampires were with George, or whatever it was he did when he was displeased.

Mitchell & Annie

Mitchell's head was starting to get tired of all that nodding, but what else could he do? Sebastien was doing him a huge favour, one that he didn't have to, and--

"Oh, sorry, am I interrupting?" Annie beamed from the doorway, and gave them all an enthusiastic wave. He had to give her credit for her tension-relieving timing.

Jack

Jack blinked gratefully. He could have hugged Annie. "I think we're finishing up," he said, almost sounding embarrassed.

Annie

"Okay, good," Annie said, happily walking into the room properly. "Because I'm heading back to the pub soon, and you absolutely have to come by and let me tap you a pint!"

A beat. "Oh, and hi to mister Tall, Brooding and Gorgeous, too. Sorry I didn't get to say hi before, I've been working." She sounded like she thought it was the most amazing thing in the world.

Sebastien

"I generally go by Sebastien," Sebastien blinked. The flirting in his voice? That was automatic. "It's a pleasure."

He managed not to say anything stunningly brilliant like 'you're the ghost,' but he was still fascinated by it. Spirits, let alone ones solid enough to pour a drink, weren't exactly frequent conversation partners at home. He could have asked her so many things, but for the sake of time ...

"We'll be sure to come by later."
