33 Apocalypse Avenue, Thursday Evening

Jack wasn't ready to say goodbye to Kaidan. He remained quite firmly opposed to this general trend of people leaving.

But if Kaidan was going to go fight purple blobby land jellyfish --or whatever he was up to -- he deserved a decent send-off. Which was why Jack had ordered several pizzas, laid in a few kegs of Canadian lager, and sent an email to everyone he could think of who might want one more chance to hang out with Kaidan.

A bad action movie played on the TV, though the sound was quite soft, and everything was ready for a low-key party.

And the slightly twisted, only halfway mirthful smile Éponine gave him in response said that she had a pretty good idea how much he didn't mean it.

"Yes, it's been a bit since I've stopped in to see you, hasn't it? That's a shame." She'd kept the light, almost breezy tone up, but dropped it now for a gentler one. "Well, in any case I'm glad you invited everyone."

"And I haven't made it by the post office lately," Jack said apologetically. "We need to fix that, don't we? I keep getting caught up in silliness. It's good to have tonight, at least."

"Even if the reason leaves a bit to be desired, hmm?" Éponine was trying to sound understanding, but it was entirely possible that some of the nuance of that was lost in her gin-roughened voice. "It's just as well, no doubt you've been as busy as I have."

"I wish I had more exciting news to report on that front," Jack admitted. "Mostly it's just been classes and work. I didn't even get sucked into that carnival last week."

Because he'd been on TV Tropes.

"What's been keeping you busy?"

Wait until Éponine discovered TV Tropes. She might spend a month on it.

She laughed harshly. "Yes, it's a good thing for you that you had nothing to do with that mess! I'd much rather hear you talk about your classes than how you ended up trapped there. Calling itself a carnival, really, it's the silliest thing I ever heard of, when there aren't even any masked parades."

She snorted, as if to dismiss the whole ridiculous notion.

"Yes, it's lucky for you that you weren't caught up in it as well. I wish I'd only had work to keep me busy, and it's done plenty of that."

"Funny," Jack said thoughtfully. "I've gotten so used to the way people here say carnival I forgot they should have masked parades."

And he felt that bittersweet tug of distance from his home.

"But I like my classes. I'll graduate in December if nothing else goes wrong, did I tell you that?" He felt compelled to knock wood after he said that, because so often things did go wrong.

"I'd never seen one here before," Éponine remarked, then with a touch of added vehemence, "and I don't much care to again, I'll tell you that."

But never mind that, it was as much as she wanted to say on the subject.

"December, is it? And then you'll be all done! But what will you do with yourself then?"

"Law school," Jack admitted. "At least, law school if I can convince them to let me start midyear. If not, I'll probably pick up teaching again until the school year after this coming one."

He smiled. "I wish I had an answer that involved being fanned on a beach somewhere, but sadly it's all a grind."

Éponine chuckled lightly. "Don't you think that would become dull after a bit, though? Lying on the sand and doing nothing -- it sounds lovely but I don't know I could carry on that way for too long. But what d'you think it will take for them to let you start sooner?"

She was a bit envious, yes. Not as envious as she might have been a year ago, though.

"I'll need to prove I can make up the ground I lost not starting with everyone else," Jack explained. "Maybe do some extra online courses in the fall."

"And you're right," he added,with the tiniest smile. "I'd get bored. But all the same,it'd be nice to lie on a beach for a while and see how long it took for boredom to arrive."

"And how long d'you think that might take?" She couldn't help being curious about -- just about everything ever, even if this time it was just an idle curiosity. "I think I might fall asleep for a bit, and then be tired of it by the time I woke up again."

She paused before adding, "Though if I had a book with me, I might not mind staying a while longer . . . school rules seem silly, that's what I think. What's it matter when you start so long's you can wrap your head around your lessons, anyway?"

Who needed smooth transitions from one subject to another? Pfft.
