33 Apocalypse Avenue, Thursday Evening

Jack wasn't ready to say goodbye to Kaidan. He remained quite firmly opposed to this general trend of people leaving.

But if Kaidan was going to go fight purple blobby land jellyfish --or whatever he was up to -- he deserved a decent send-off. Which was why Jack had ordered several pizzas, laid in a few kegs of Canadian lager, and sent an email to everyone he could think of who might want one more chance to hang out with Kaidan.

A bad action movie played on the TV, though the sound was quite soft, and everything was ready for a low-key party.

It's not that Allie was actively avoiding Kaidan, but words were hard. Passive avoidance was easier at least until it wasn't.

"So..."

Kaidan smiled a little. Awkwardly. "Hey," he said. "Haven't seen you in a while."

Fortunately indignation was easy. "The island was being cute again. I spent a few days as a bat," she explained.

"Okay," Kaidan said, holding up his hands. "Sorry. I didn't know."

"Oh no, I'm not blaming you for not knowing. It's just if I hadn't changed back in time, you would have left and I would have missed it. I'm annoyed that was even a possibility." And being annoyed was a hell of a lot easier to deal with then how she really felt given the situation.

"I would've tried to come back," Kaidan said, but he knew it was both academic and probably-- well, it'd be true, but the chances of him succeeding...

"And I would have tried to turn up on your doorstep. But things happen," said the girl who'd only made it home once in close to two years.

"Yeah, things happen," Kaidan agreed.

There was a short pause.

"But they didn't," he said, "And we're both here, so... thanks for coming, Allie."

"Like I'd miss it? Not going to happen. Besides," Allie added in an attempt to not get as sappy as she felt. "I wanted to see the movie."

Kaidan let out a chuckle. "It's, uh. I don't know where Jack dug it up," he admitted. "It's pretty bad."

"It's something all right," she said with a grin. "I just hope the island doesn't get ideas. I'm not sure where to find a chain saw."

"Well, it's been raining fish," Kaidan said, glancing towards the window. "Sharks may be next."

"I'm blaming you if that happen. Just so you know."

Allie paused, smile fading a little. "It's not going to be the same without you around here."

Kaidan smiled self-consciously. "It's not like I left the house that much," he said. "But uh... yeah. I'll miss you. I will."

"Same. You know that right?" she asked.

"I know," Kaidan said. "Morning runs aren't going to be the same, are they?"

"No, way too quiet. Unless the flamingos suddenly learn to talk." Which wasn't entirely outside the realm of possibility.

"Well, give it the right weekend," Kaidan said.

"I promise, I'll send video when it happens. I'm sure they'll be asking for you," she laughed.

"So, is this where we do that hug thing again?"

"Yeah," Kaidan said. The smile on his face finally broadened into something real. "C'mere," he said, moving in for the hug.

With a smile of her own, Allie stepped in and hugged him tight.
