Room 308, Friday Morning

Jack hadn't really slept after getting back from his date with Emma. He'd taken a token nap, but in the end the excitement got to him. By seven, he was dressed and his possessions had been boxed neatly. (He had no idea how he'd acquired so many things in just over a year, but he had.)

He had a few hours before his portal left, so he rested on his bare mattress, reading the book Ms. Cabot had given him as a way of focusing his mind away from his nerves. He'd have Sebastien in his new world; nothing could go too far wrong.

The door to the room was open.

"You look like you're going somewhere," Alex said idly, stopping in Jack's doorway and glancing around the room.

Jack repeated Alex's gaze, smiling a bit. "What gave you that idea?"

"Just a gut feeling I have," he said, smirking. "You outta here soon? Or just going for that minimalistic, zen look for a few days?"

"My portal's at noon," Jack confirmed. "I've been graduated for a while. I think I'd start growing mold if I stayed the rest of the summer."

"Or you'd just get a really good tan," Alex said, wandering into the room absently. "Got big plans for home? Or just gonna bum around for awhile, get your legs adjusted to the lack of strangeness there."

"Nothing right off, just getting settled," Jack said. "I don't start classes until September. By then I should be used to a shortage of animal transformations and food falling from the sky."

He gestured to the desk chair, inviting Alex to sit if he wished.

Alex did, sliding into the chair and stretching out, looking a little uncomfortable with the situation. He didn't always do great with the sentimental.

"Gonna write?" Alex asked, going for teasing. "Singing telegram? Carrier pigeons?"

Jack wasn't great with sentimental either, so teasing worked perfectly.

"Carrier pigeons," he decided. "Mostly because it will be fun to imagine you having to chase them down when they get here."

"Fuck that, I'll just throw something at them, make them come to me," Alex said, making a face. "I don't chase anyone. They come to me. That's how it works."

Oh, ego.

[Yeah, I'm still getting the occasional one but mostly nada.]

"I'm sure your animal magnetism is irresistible to carrier pigeons, Alex," Jack said dryly. "Even if I sent one for someone else, it would just fly to you."

"Animals, girls, guys, they all just flock to me," he said, snickering. "You'd probably do better with just calling. Or hopping a portal and finding a bar somewhere where people can meet you. Gonna miss the island?"

"I'll miss the people," Jack admitted, more serious. "You come here not expecting much, and then -- it grows on you, through all the strangeness and everything else. I'll be in touch."

"I'm sure some of the people will miss you too," Alex agreed with a slight nod. "Any regrets about your time here?"

"I don't really do regrets," Jack said.

If he had a serious one, it would have been hurting Karla's feelings so badly. But that was a whole long story, and the girl was over it, anyhow.

"I didn't look nearly as good with pink hair as I thought I did," he finally said. "What about you, anything you've tallied up in the last year?"

"My regrets have regrets," Alex said, shrugging and not really thinking too much on it. "I like to collect them and add them to my pile of issues so I can use them to woo girls."

He was making light of things, yes, but talking about his own regrets made him twitchy.

"Use angst as a weapon," Jack said. "How well does that work?"

He didn't do it, but he wasn't much good at brooding, anyhow.

"Depends on the girl," Alex said, shrugging. "Here? It doesn't work that well. They seem to see through me. It's annoying."

Jack snorted. "I think Effy's unusually good at seeing through people," he said. "Unless you mean other girls."

"Yeah, she's a bit too good at that," Alex said, shaking his head. "And I think she prides herself on it. She enjoys unnerving people far too much."

"A girl needs her hobbies?" Jack suggested with a little shrug.

Changing the topic, he said, "What plans do you have for the rest of the summer -- other than missing me, of course?"

"I don't tend to make plans that far ahead," Alex said, shrugging a shoulder. "I'll go to classes, probably get into a fight or two, get drunk but that's all I have planned. Not going anywhere for awhile so I've got time to build my legacy."

"You're a senior now, so you're supposed to terrorize freshmen, aren't you?" Jack asked. "I missed my chance. I hadn't seen enough modern movies then."

"Eh, that's true," Alex said, nodding. "And the fresh meat does arrive tomorrow. Maybe I could convince someone that Rose is a maneater in every sense of the word and likes the new students the best."

"She'd kill you," Jack pronounced. (Though the suggestion did remind him he'd missed Rose lately.)

Then: "Get someone to film the whole thing, if you do. I'd want to see it."

"I'm too adorable to kill," Alex said, smirking. "She couldn't hit such a pretty face. I'd charm her."

She'd break his nose.
